The Bio-X Program would like to announce our call for applications for the Undergraduate Summer Research Program with funding available starting in the summer of 2018 (June 25th to August 31st).
Introducing undergraduates to the excitement of interdisciplinary research at the frontiers of knowledge is essential for training a new generation to participate in discovery. The Bio-X Undergraduate Summer Research Program (Bio-X USRP) provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to conduct hands-on research, build awareness of interdisciplinary areas, and network with Bio-X faculty. This formative experience influences their subsequent work at Stanford and beyond.
Stanford undergraduate students are eligible to participate and should be in communication with Bio-X affiliated faculty (click here for the complete list) to decide on an interdisciplinary project that may be supported by this award. A list of previous Stanford faculty who have mentored students in the program is available here. (You are not limited to faculty members on this list.) Please see previous projects here.
The Bio-X Undergraduate Summer Research Program awards a total of $7000 (or the equivalent of the VPUE/UAR major grant) to the student for a 10-week period of full-time research during the summer quarter and provides $1000 to their mentoring faculty to support their research. $7000 (or the equivalent of the VPUE/UAR major grant) is the maximum stipend amount a student may receive even in conjunction with any other funding source for the summer quarter; if awarded by Bio-X, the student must inform Bio-X of any other funding sources that the student is receiving.
To encourage the students to meet each other and to learn about different fields of research, sponsoring faculty members are asked to present short talks about the work in their group. Each Wednesday at noon, 3 faculty members will give talks to the students. To accept the award, students are required to confirm:
- Participation in all 10 scheduled Bio-X Undergraduate Research Talks;
- Commitment to full-time lab research during the 10-week period (June 25th to August 31st);
- Presentation of a poster to the Bio-X community prior to the conclusion of the program on August 22nd.
Requests for any exceptions to the full-time on-campus commitment as described in the three bullets above from June 25th to August 31st must be preapproved by the Bio-X program and must accompany the application.
Faculty: Please note that we expect the students to be at the summer talks every Wednesday. Please help us by not scheduling meetings on Wednesdays at noon when the student’s presence is required. Please also ensure that students do not sign up for other conferences, symposia, or seminars on Wednesdays during the 10-week period. The only exceptions we will make for students to be excused from attendance are illnesses and family emergencies that are communicated to our office prior to missing a Wednesday talk.
Students: Please note that exceptions are not at the discretion of your faculty/mentor and must be discussed with the Bio-X program personnel prior to making any arrangements. Please write to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Complete applications must be received, not postmarked, by December 8, 2017, at 5:00 pm PST. The online application may be completed by the student or faculty mentor (after the student and faculty have met, agreed on a project, and collected the needed information). If the application is filled by a student, an email will be sent by Bio-X to the mentoring faculty asking for confirmation of mentorship via email to email@example.com by December 8, 2017, at 5:00 pm PST. See link below for complete details on application eligibility and requirements and to access the application.
